TIPS TO MAKE YOUR HOME MORE GREEN OR ECO-FRIENDLY

Green and Eco-Friendly Home

We are amid a climate crisis.

It is no longer ‘climate change’, the change is here, and we are now in a crisis.

Scientists are now saying that we are in “uncharted territory”, owing to the billions of tones of CO2 that we pump into the atmosphere every year.

We are the masses and we have power together. Your home is where you spend a lot of your time, so why not start there?

Here are some ways to make a green and eco-friendly home:

1. Grow your own

We are not really able to grow full-on fruit and veg, which would be ideal.

However, we do grow our own herbs, which we use regularly in our cooking — rosemary, mint, thyme, sage, chives… the list goes on.

It is so handy and saves us money buying dried herbs that just do not taste as good.

Having plants around the house helps produce more oxygen, and they consume CO2, so you are doing a little bit more to help with the carbon emissions crisis.

Plus, plants look good! And we are making our home green and eco-friendly.

2. Energy-efficient light bulbs

This one can be a bit pricey, but some energy companies are providing this as a free service.

Switching your current light bulbs to energy-efficient ones can help reduce carbon emissions, those light bulbs use less energy than before.

3. Make your own cleaning products

This sounds like it is really complicated, but it is not, plus, again, it will save your money and yes again you are avoiding the global issue by contributing in green and eco-friendly homes.

Most cleaning products come in plastic containers that you throw out as soon as you are done with them, and they are made up of tones of chemicals that cannot even pronounce.

When you make your own, you know exactly what goes into them, and you can tweak the recipes to suit you.

As a bonus, you will not throw away plastic containers on the regular.

4. Don’t wash your clothes

Okay, so I do not actually mean do not wash your clothes, but rather: do not wash them as much.

Unless you are trekking through mud or spilled something down yourself, you should not need to wash your clothes after every wash (except for underwear).

If you do need to wash your clothes, try to make it as big a load as possible, so you do not have to use as much water.

5. Sell or donate old furniture and homeware

When an old piece of furniture is falling apart, or when you are redecorating to make your home green and eco-friendly, it is tempting to simply throw it away.

Don’t!

someone can always make use of it, even if they have to tear it apart.

One person’s trash is another person’s treasure.

Donate your furniture to a charity shop or sell it online for someone to upcycle it.

Just don’t throw it away.

6. Save your food

We all been there, you see an absolute bargain in the shop for fresh fruit, so you buy it, with the best of intentions, but a couple of days go by, and the fruit’s still uneaten.

Then it starts to mold.

Instead, when you buy something fresh, put it in your freezer.

You can use it later, and it will last so much longer.

7. Food deliveries and shopping local

I was surprised when I looked into food deliveries as an eco-friendlier option for shopping, but it makes sense.

If you are a super-dedicated eco-warrior with a garden, then try to grow as many things as you can, so you do not even have to go shopping.
